Welcome
to Greece, The place of gods, stunning beaches and some of the best mediterranean food (and not to forget, amazing people)

The country of mythical creatures and gods strikes true. While many years of economic turmoil have clouded and humbled Greece as the top island destination in Europe, it remains a top location for short and medium stays. In the first place, the people. Never have we experienced such friendly people in the Mediterranean than the Greek. Proud, knowledgeable and unbelievably charming, you only then realize how this layer adds to your experience in a country. The food is well reputed internationally and having it locally is no disappointment, especially if you like some of the more traditional offerings. But don’t be afraid to try dishes and local, modernized versions of these.

Greece- Where to go

Ilonian Islands

Isn’t this the dreamiest picture (along with the Phi Phi islands). Well, this is not the reality. Like Phi Phi, it’s hoarded with tourists and boats saturating the bay. So if going to snap this picture with the boat wreck is your reason for going, don’t.

That being said, if you keep your expectations at check, the islands of Zakinthos, Ithaca and Kefalonia are some of the most beautiful on Earth. While most of the mediterranean have a turquoise tint into its waters, the Ilonian sea has a blue that we have never seen before.

The hospitality is what you expect in Greece, the activities (boat tours for example) are affordable and nice and exploring while sunbathing is unreal. Crystal clear. A week here (or much longer for a work/mental break) is highly recommended.

Crete

Crete is the second largest island on the Mediterranean. You need a car to move around. But it is so rich in architecture, diversity and nature that it is so worth it.

It even has 2 major airports that are fantastically connected with European hubs. It has super friendly people and great, fresh food yearlong.

Falassarna beach will stun you with it’s shades of turquoise waters Elafonisi’s pink sand is something you need to see to believe. Both located in the Chania region, do not miss the chance to visit the Chania town which is beautifully dense and friendly. Dinner and night time strolls are a must.

The Heraklion region is also a great area to discover architecture and pockets of great cafes and restaurants by the beach.

Hot tip: if you have a car, go adventure and head to Seitan Limania (pictured above). It’s a mountainous region that will feel a bit like an off road trip. Since it’s low speed, you will appreciate great views and traveling goats passing by. The last part is done by foot. And the reward is a stunning bay- which you can explore and swim in and is unique in that the minerals from the rock formations around it give the water an incredible natural gradient until it hits the open sea

Mainland- Athens

Once you are done touring the Acropolis and the relatively new Acropolis museum (must see), one must see of the outdoor theathers and cinemas. Nowhere in the world will you find such a backdrop while enjoying a piece at Lycabettus Hill or at Kino Paris.

The Islands- The Musts

Mykonos

Great place to party and mingle. There is something for every taste.

Santorini

As amazing as it looks on pictures. Full of life, charm and magic. It is very walkable (although not for people with limited mobility). We never stayed here but imagine it can be a tad annoying with tourist pouring in by the busloaded all day

Getting there:

3/5

Greece has always been well connected. Athens is a major European airport with several transcontinental flights. Many like to make a 2-3 days stopover there before continuing on to the islands to experience it’s rich history.

Many of the islands have their own airports and several low cost carriers offer direct flights to many of them for years now.

Once there, the ferry network is unmatched in Europe. It is extensive, professional and very convenient.

People friendliness:

5/5

We cannot state how great the locals make you feel. Always smiling, friendly.

Infrastructure:

2/5

On island transportation can be difficult, even on the more developed islands like Crete. Public transport is not frequent. Renting a car (watch out for speed radars!) or taxi is recommended.

Beach and entertainment:

3/5

In our experience, this can be a varied experience in Greece. The diversity and range can be very similar in small places but often, more than adequate. The beaches can be quite incredible but sometimes lack some services and infrastructure.

Accomodation range and quality:

4/5

You can find anything here. Rental properties in cities (Athens) can be very inconsistent, we recommend a hotel. For the island, try things out! There is rarely a country where renting a beachside small house can be this good. Booking near a village and markets will make it that much better.

The overall quality of stays and offerings is one of a clearly long and reputable hospitality tradition.
